What
is Mental Illness? In order to qualify for services at TLS you must have an Axis I (DSM IV-R) diagnosis. Schizophrenia is a serious disorder which
affects how a person thinks, feels and acts. Someone with schizophrenia may
have difficulty distinguishing between what is real and what is imaginary;
may be unresponsive or withdrawn; and may have difficulty expressing
normal emotions in social situations. Contrary to public perception, schizophrenia
is not split personality or multiple personality. The vast
majority of people with schizophrenia are not violent and do not pose
a danger to others. Schizophrenia is not caused by childhood
experiences, poor parenting or lack of willpower, nor are the symptoms
identical for each person. Bipolar Disorder:
Bipolar disorder,
also known as manic depression, is an illness involving one or more episodes
of serious mania and depression. The illness causes a person’s mood to swing
from excessively “high” and/or irritable to sad and hopeless, with periods of
a normal mood in between. More than 2 million Americans suffer from bipolar
disorder. Bipolar disorder typically begins in
adolescence or early adulthood and continues throughout life. It is often not
recognized as an illness and people who have it may suffer needlessly for
years. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder: Post-traumatic stress
disorder (PTSD) is an extremely debilitating condition that can occur after
exposure to a terrifying event or ordeal in which grave physical harm
occurred or was threatened. Traumatic events that can trigger PTSD include
violent personal assaults such as rape or mugging, natural or human-caused
disasters, accidents, or military combat. Military troops who served in Vietnam
and the Gulf Wars; rescue workers involved in the aftermath of the Oklahoma
City Bombing; survivors of accidents, rape, physical and sexual abuse, and
other crimes; immigrants fleeing violence in their countries; survivors of
the 1994 California earthquake, the 1997 South Dakota floods, and hurricanes
Hugo and Andrew; and people who witness traumatic events are among the people
who develop PTSD. Families of victims can also develop the disorder. For more information on Mental Illnesses contact: www.nmha.org For family members of those with a mental illness: www.nami.org/sites/albuquerque |
